Resumen
The main objective of this project application is to establish the link between desiccation and amphibian survival through biogeochemical studies related to water quality. The study of sediment by means of direct determinations and laboratory experiments of sediment re-flooding will allow us to predict the degree of sensitivity of a variety of ponds to acidification and eutrophication. Specific objectives are:
- Objective 1: to measure the proportion between S and divalent cations in the sediment of ponds with different wet-phase duration in order to asses the potential vulnerability of wetlands to the acidification produced by the oxidation of iron sulfides following the diagnostic tool developed by Lucassen et al. (2002).
- Objective 2: to measure the concentration of P bound to iron-oxyhydroxides in the sediment of ponds with different wet-phase duration to assess the bioavailability of P as a tool for predicting potential eutrophication by means of the EDTA method of P-fractionation (Golterman, 1996).
- Objective 3: to test the toxicity of acidification (low pH and high concentration of sulfide) on the development of aquatic vertebrate fauna using amphibian eggs in laboratory incubations of sediment.
