Resumen
Veta la Palma, a private fish-farm included within the Doñana Natural Park, is
internationally recognized for its biodiversity and is considered to be the most important
privately owned property for the protection of aquatic birds of Europe. In many
aquatic systems, like in this estate, birds act as important hosts for adult manipulative
parasites as trematodes. Such parasites should have important impacts and effects on
biodiversity as they play an important role on prey availability for predators such as
birds and fish. In this context, a first aim of this project will be to investigate the
presence of trematode parasites inside an integral component of this estuarine and marsh food webs: the shrimp Palaemonetes varians. Then, we will study the manipulation induced by this parasite in its intermediary hosts as well as the consequences of its presence on host’s fitness traits.

A first goal of the present study is to investigate the presence of digenetic trematode parasites in the crustacea Palaemonetes varians and to determine the effect of metacercariae the behaviour of this host collected in several ponds of Veta la palma. Our hypothesis is that the presence of encysted trematodes affects the swimming behavior and escape responses of infected grass shrimp, modifying the susceptibility of the decapod to predation by the definitive host.
